Humanwell expanded its presence to Africa to provide equitable healthcare solutions to a region with tremendous unmet medical needs but historically under-served by the global pharmaceutical industry. The company established Humanwell Pharma Mali S.A. in 2009 and Humanwell Pharma Burkina S.A. in 2010 to specifically serve the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) countries.

Humanwell (Africa) Pharmaceutical S.A. started to build a manufacturing facility under the current GMP standard to meet the tremendous needs of essential drugs in Africa. The Mali pharmaceutical manufacturing facility, the first of its kind in West Africa, was later adopted as the industry standard by the Mali government. In 2015, Humanwell Pharmaceutical Ethiopia PLC started to build a manufacturing facility in Ethiopia, which is expected to be completed in 2017, to serve patients in East African countries.
